Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Book of the Week

This book was selected by the Amazon Editors as the 2014 #1 Book of the Year.  I must admit that I’m very much looking forward to discussing it with my Meadowlake Neighbors at our April Book club meeting.  However, for me personally, it isn’t anywhere near the top of my 2014 list or any other year for that matter.   It is admittedly well written and full of interesting and dynamic characters but I found it to be extremely depressing and could hardly wait to be finished so I can move on to something else.   I’ll leave the comments open on this article so that anyone who has read it can share their thoughts.   I’m very curious to know what you think.

Here’s the synopsis from Amazon:  “Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet . . … So begins the story of this exquisite debut novel, about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue-in Marilyn’s case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James’s case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party.”
