Dunwoody Springs Elementary launched their first “One School, One Book” event this Fall to encourage students to read and foster a sense of community through literature. The program requires the entire school community (teachers, administrators, parents & students) to read the same book simultaneously.
Dunwoody Springs Elementary chose to read “The World According to Humphrey”, a story about a hamster’s adventures living in a classroom. Dr. Brittany Kaufman, a veterinarian at Dunwoody Veterinary Center, supported this initiative by visiting with the students to explore how to select the best pet to fit each family’s lifestyle and the needs our pets share with people.
According to Ms. Christy Tyson, DSE Library Media Specialist, the purpose of the “One School, One Book” program is “to create a sense of community within the school while working with real world connections with our students.” So far, the program has turned out to be a huge success for everyone!
