As the children of our community get ready for the start of school, we sometimes forget that many of these boys and girls are living below the poverty line in greater Atlanta and have never had a book of their very own.
Assistance League of Atlanta is trying to tackle the literacy problem by putting books into the hands of children in need. In October Assistance League will participate in a national children’s book drive as part of USA Weekend’s Make a Difference Day.
Locally, we hope to collect 5,000 books and we would like for the community to be aware of this campaign so that people can donate new and like-new children’s books (ages 1-12) to the drive. Books will be collected during October at many locations in Dunwoody, including Alice Cleaners, Bernadette’s Hair Salon, Crema Gourmet Espresso, Picayune Toys, Lookin’ Good Hair Salon and Book Warehouse. They will be distributed to low-income schools, homeless shelters and non-profit agencies that service the underprivileged.
Assistance League of Atlanta will celebrate Make a Difference Day with a packing and distribution event for Sheltering Arms on Friday, October 24th and again on Saturday, October 25th for Interfaith Outreach.
Donate books at our drop off locations and help us put books in the hands of local children.
