GAIL CAMERON WESCOTT was a reporter and writer for national magazines for over four decades. She began her career at LIFE Magazine in the late fifties and early sixties when it was the largest, most powerful magazine in the world. She became one of LIFE’s first female byline writers at a time when women were not expected to advance beyond editorial researcher. She has since written for PEOPLE, TIME, TIME-LIFE BOOKS, LADIES HOME JOURNAL, McCALLS, READERS DIGEST and others, and is the author of “ROSE, A Biography of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy” (G.P. Putnam). At LIFE, she was part of a team of journalists covering the Kennedy family during the 1960 campaign. On November 22, 1963, the day John F. Kennedy was a killed, she flew immediately to Washington and was at Andrews Air Force Base when the plane bearing his body returned from Dallas. Over the years she has covered a wide spectrum of events ranging from The Beatles arrival in America to the Olympics. She has profiled politicos, musicians, authors, criminals, evangelists –everyone from Julia Child and Yo-Yo Ma to Tammy Faye Bakker, Bette Davis, and Donald Rumsfeld. She is a graduate of Smith College where she sang on the European tours of the Smith College Chamber Singers which were covered by LIFE Magazine, paving the way to her career.
