Don’t miss this breathtaking ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS performance, featuring pieces by Eric Barnum, Aaron Copland, Bob Chilcott, Malcolm Dalglish, Antonio Estevez, Stephen Hatfield, Stephen Paulus, Franz Schubert, and Peter Louis van Dijk. Known for programming bold, contemporary pieces, Ms. Mathis has chosen a repertoire that reflects what lies on the horizon: beginnings, departure and promise. Hear the future now with over 200 ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS ages 7-18 representing seven AYS Choirs located throughout Atlanta. Performance highlights include O Yo Yo by Stephen Hatfield, current AYS Composer Next Door.

The AYS COMPOSER NEXT DOOR PROJECT was launched in November 2012 and grew out of the idea that singers can better understand the music they sing when given a chance to interact directly with composers. Throughout the AYS season, Singers plan, organize and implement activities with living composers to later perform their works, showcased in each AYS major performance.

The 2013-2014 AYS Composer Next Door Series featured Andrejs Jansons in December, Atlanta’s own Kevin Robison (Artistic Director of the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus) in March, and will be ending on a high note this July –
an AYS commission from talented American composer Eric Banks, Miers und Kluss. This piece is based on works by Latvian poet Maris Salejs, and ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS will present the world premiere at the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia.

Bringing music to life for 39 seasons, ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS is Atlanta’s premier choir for children and youth. With the cooperation of dedicated community leaders, schoolteachers, arts professionals, and Stephen J. Ortlip (Director for 23 years), AYS was founded in 1975 when the idea of boys and girls singing together in a community choir was rare in the United States. Under Music Director Paige F. Mathis (also an AYS alumna) and Executive Director Virginia M. Thompson, AYS now accepts over 200 children ages 7 to 18 each year into one of seven AYS choirs where they serve, grow, learn and sing together. Singers come from 100 public and private school environments, represent over 60 zip codes, and truly reflect Atlanta. Every year, AYS serves hundreds of Atlanta-area children and over 90,000 people in Atlanta and around the world.

Recently, ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS was awarded two Gold Diplomas at the 2012 World Choir Games, performed in Carnegie Hall under the batons of Francisco Núñez and Jonathan Willcocks, sang at the 2013 Peace Corps Awards with President Jimmy Carter and will be returning to the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, to sing in The Champions Competition, Summer 2014! Visit www.aysc.org to find more details of our past tours, performances, collaborations and community involvement.

While celebrating a rich history, AYS looks forward to an exciting future and continuing its dedication to music literacy, commissioning of new American choral works, support of local musicians, presentation of cutting-edge performance formats, interdisciplinary collaborative education, and especially outreach to underserved children in the Atlanta area. AYS seeks boys & girls in grades 2 – 8 and young men grades 9-12 of all musical levels. Auditions will be held through July for each of seven AYS Choirs – including satellite Training Choirs rehearsing in Atlanta (Callanwolde), South DeKalb, North Atlanta (Chamblee/Dunwoody) and South Cobb. Schedule an audition before MAY 15 and receive two complimentary tickets to H O R I Z O N S, May 17, 8PM. Meet new friends, travel the world, perform live, learn important music skills, and sing the future now with AYS.
