Man dies after trying to cross I-285 on foot

The Dunwoody Police are investigating a fatality accident that occurred on I-285 Westbound at Ashford Dunwoody Road interchange. The crash occurred at approximately 2157 hours on Saturday, November 16, 2013.

The initial investigation shows the victim, Darryl Spencer Ward, age 51 of Lawrenceville, was attempting to walk south across I-285 within the Westbound lanes. Mr. Ward was struck by two vehicles in the travel lanes of I-285 West. Mr. Ward was deceased on scene of the accident.

Prior to the accident Dunwoody Police responded to Perimeter Mall at approximately 2147 hours regarding a theft. The suspect fled on foot from officers towards the Ravinia business complex where officers lost visual of the suspect. While officers were searching for the suspect in the area, several calls came in of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on I-285 West. It is suspected that Mr. Ward was attempting to cross I-285 to elude police.
The crash is still under investigation at this time, but no charges are expected to be taken against any of the drivers.
