Paul A. Barton, head of school at The Avery Coonley School near Chicago, has been appointed the next head of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School (HIES), effective July 1, 2014.
Barton has a wide array of administrative and teaching experience with independent, parochial, and public schools—from pre-kindergarten through the university level. His many roles have included teacher, coach, residential dean, admissions associate, and senior administrator. He also recently received a Klingenstein Fellowship from the Teachers College–Columbia University, and completed his executive education from the Center for Nonprofit Management at the Kellogg School of Business–Northwestern University.
“We are thrilled to be calling Paul Barton as our next head of school,” said HIES Board of Trustees Chair Bruce Ford. “We were impressed by his focus on developing every facet of the academic, artistic, athletic, and spiritual potential of each child.”
Added Rector Michael Sullivan, “He will embody the spirit of our community among students, faculty, parents, friends and Greater Atlanta. Paul has the energy, vision, and expertise to build upon the great traditions of HIES while also leading us into new dreams and aspirations.”
Barton will come to HIES with his wife, Leanne, and three children, Sam (11), Abby (9), and Charlie (4). Leanne Barton, a former teacher, is very active in the community and recently served as president of a school parents’ association.
“I am extremely honored to become a member of the Holy Innocents’ community as its next head of school,” said Barton. “Leanne and I were overwhelmed by the warmth of the Holy Innocents’ community, the passion and professionalism of the faculty and staff, and the vision and commitment of the Board of Trustees. We do feel called to be part of this very special place – a place dedicated to the development of each and every child – spiritually, academically, artistically, and athletically.”
Barton has served as an instructor at Concordia University, and principal of the Harold G. Fearn Elementary School and Annunciation Catholic School, both in Illinois. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Great Books Foundation, has led ISACS (Independent Schools of the Central States) accreditation teams, and belongs to the Rotary Club of Downers Grove, Illinois.
