Les Misérables – Audra’s review

Hugh Jackman and Atlanta Director Kenny Leon

My “movie girlfriend” emailed me and a few of her friends about 1 PM yesterday and wanted to know if any of us would be interested in seeing Les Misérables at 4:30 followed by a Q&A with Hugh Jackman.  I could hardly type fast enough and simply answered “meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”!   I know, right…..most of you would have done the same thing!

I couldn’t believe he was going to traipse across country to be in Atlanta for a Q&A less than 24 hours after accepting the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical for playing Jean Valjean in Les Misérables!  He has been nominated for the Academy Award as well and after seeing the movie last night I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t win!

Jackman is filming a new movie “Prisoners” in Conyers with Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo, Maria Bello and Paul Dano, so lucky for me, he stopped by a private screening of the movie held at Regal Atlantic Station!  He was humble and funny and very handsome!  You can click here to get more details from The Peach Buzz!

As for my review of the movie……I’ve read the book and seen the play more than once.   I love this story and although I knew it was a musical I was not expecting that the entire movie would be performed in song.   I’m guessing there are fewer than 10 lines that are merely spoken not sung!  When you think about the star studded cast (Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway | See full cast and crew) does it shock you like it did me that Russell Crowe is singing throughout this movie?!  He and all the others were phenomenal!

The 157 minute movie flew by!   The story is an amazing tale of grace and redemption.  I loved the movie and highly recommend it.   However, I realize that musicals are not for everyone and my kids would probably have walked out after 10 minutes!  Which is why I went with a college girlfriend instead!  She and I both LOVED it!
