Lower School Teaching Assistant 24-25

 

St. Martin’s Episcopal School is seeking culturally competent and responsive candidates to
serve as Lower School Teaching Assistants. This position supports the Lead Teacher with
work and activities inside and outside of the classroom. The Assistant Teacher is primarily
responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher in any way that is helpful or directed by the Lead
Teacher. The Assistant Teacher is expected to maintain strict confidentiality regarding students,
parents, staff and school related matters.

Job Title: Teaching Assistant, LS Status: Full-time/Non Exempt
Anticipated Start: 24-25 School Year Reports to: LS Principal

Essential Functions

Meet with the Lead Teacher prior to the start of the School year and each School day to
discuss classroom assignments and responsibilities.
Lead class when teacher is absent and/or involved in collaborative planning or meetings.
Perform administrative/class related duties to support the classroom, including but not limited to: making copies and grading papers, creating bulletin boards, and other duties as determined by the Lead Teacher.
Perform occasional duties, as requested by the Division Principal which may include, but not limited to, lunch duty and recess duties.
Set up for the day’s activities.
Escorts and/or accompanies students back to homeroom after class.
Escorts and/or accompanies students to the clinic for medical attention.
Instructs and encourages individual students as prescribed by the Lead Teacher.
Works with students in whole groups, small groups or individually during classroom learning experiences, as directed by the Lead Teacher.
Assists students with time management and organizational skills, as directed by the Lead Teacher.
Chaperone School field trips.
Attends all grade-level, departmental and required School meetings, as well as organizes and attends Parent Night.
Attends chapel services.
Is an active member of the faculty by participating on School committees.
Adheres to all School policies, including safety and emergency procedures.
Competencies

Demonstrated capability to interface and maintain effective relationships with parents,
faculty and staff.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Ability and desire to act as essential support to the Lead Teacher.

Education

Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Completed or a desire to complete course work with a focus on Early Childhood Education.
Proficiency with multiple technologies, such as: MS Office, Internet, Google, Email.
Experience
Must have experience working with Lower School aged children, specifically grades K-4.
Desire to plan and work collaboratively on a team is key.

Physical Requirements
This job is performed inside and outside; the noise level can be soft to loud. While performing
the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, take stairs, talk, and
hear for extended periods of time. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or
feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally
lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Employee must be able to move freely and without restriction
around the classroom and school campus, as well as supervise students on the playground.
