City leaders unveil The Landscape of Dunwoody
“The Landscape of Dunwoody” mosaic is a beautiful and highly visible new piece of public art located at the corner of Womack Road and Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
Dunwoody, GA – March 20, 2024 – Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch, Dunwoody City Council members, and Dunwoody Art Commission members gathered today for the unveiling of The Landscape of Dunwoody, a new mosaic by artists Julie Mazzoni and Jennifer Freeman. Located on Womack Road at the corner of Chamblee Dunwoody Road, this new piece of public art was installed on the retaining wall that was built as part of an intersection improvement project completed last year.
The Landscape of Dunwoody is 36 feet long and varies in height from 3 ½ feet on the left side to 5 feet on the right side. The materials include stained glass, fused glass, and porcelain tile. The design includes the city’s name in a colorful display of trees, hills, fields, and sky.
“The mosaic is stunning, especially when you get up close. It adds a colorful and creative touch to an intersection that serves as a gateway to the Dunwoody Village and the Dunwoody Cultural Arts Center,” said Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch. “This is another example of our commitment to growing Dunwoody’s public art scene.”
In August 2023, Julie and Jennifer began building the mosaic in their own home studios by breaking it down into 12 panels and moving them back and forth between locations. Jennifer focused on the porcelain tile pieces, while Julie worked on the glass. “We were surprised by how well we worked together,” Julie said. “It’s unusual and gratifying to work with so many colors,” Jennifer added. The artists posted weekly videos of their progress on YouTube.
The Dunwoody Art Commission proposed the idea of adding public art to the Womack/Chamblee Dunwoody intersection improvement project. Commission members worked with Dunwoody Public Works to dedicate space on the new concrete retaining wall for art, and Dunwoody City Council supported the plan.
“We’re very excited to welcome this beautiful piece of public art for everyone to enjoy,” said Howard Wertheimer, chair of the Dunwoody Art Commission. “Art Commission members look forward to more meaningful collaborations like this to continue adding significant public art that makes our community more beautiful.”
