by Audra H. Anders for The Aha! Connection
It’s been over 10 years since I read Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. I remember thinking I may never (ever) read a book that good ever again. I’ve been waiting more than 13 years for him to write another book! After reading an article about his new book, The Covenant of Water, I could not download it to my Kindle fast enough.
I was ENTHRALLED from the first page. Verghese is a BRILLIANT story teller. I loved each and every one of the characters. The way he intertwines people and families from 1900 to 1977 and how they all fit together in the end is magnificent. Simply magnificent.
FYI – Oprah loved it too….said it was in her top 3 books of all time! I finished the book yesterday and now I’m obsessed with The Covenant of Water Companion Podcast, A 6-Part Limited Series hosted by none other than Oprah Winfrey herself!
Here’s how Amazon summarizes the book:
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl—and future matriarch, known as Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants.
