Dunwoody celebrates Juneteenth with StoryWalk®

A Flag for Juneteenth was selected as the StoryWalk® for June.

Dunwoody, GA – June 8, 2023 – Dunwoody Parks and Recreation will present a special StoryWalk® throughout the month of June to celebrate Juneteenth. A Flag for Juneteenth will be on display in two locations: near the playground at Brook Run Park and at the Dunwoody Nature Center.

“To educate our residents and emphasize the importance of this holiday, we have selected A Flag for Juneteenth to share in two visible locations in Dunwoody,” said Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch. “We are thrilled to continue to use art and culture to celebrate our diversity.”

A Flag for Juneteenth is written and illustrated by expert quilter Kim Taylor, who shares a unique and powerful story of the celebration of the first Juneteenth from the perspective of a young girl. Juneteenth marks the day when freedom finally came to the last of the enslaved people in the South on June 19, 1865. Celebrated for generations, it became a federal holiday, observed on the 19th of June, in 2021.

Dunwoody’s StoryWalks are supported by the DeKalb County Public Library and the DeKalb Library Foundation. A StoryWalk is an outdoor experience for families where a children’s book is placed, page by page, along a walking trail. As you walk the path, you are directed to the next page in the story. The StoryWalk concept was created by Anne Ferguson and developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
