City of Dunwoody Celebrates Arts and Culture Month with New Murals and More to Come
DUNWOODY, Ga. – October 18, 2022 – The City of Dunwoody, the thriving Atlanta suburb just north of Atlanta, shines a light on the city’s new public art initiatives to mark Dunwoody Arts & Culture Month – a month-long celebration each October for locals and tourists alike to immerse themselves in the community’s rich art, culture and nature.
“It is our mission to provide our residents and visitors with unbeatable spaces to work, play and relax,” said Dunwoody Economic Development Director Michael Starling. “We are excited to announce Dunwoody’s newest community enhancements and cannot wait to see how they progress further.”
The new public art initiatives include:
AMPLIFY, Spruill Gallery’s Smoke House Wall
On October 15, the Spruill Center for the Arts unveiled the latest AMPLIFY outdoor mural installation at the Spruill Gallery, titled “The Forest for the Trees” by Alice Collins. The artwork was revealed to attendees of the Spirits for Spruill Fundraiser. The new mural is the latest in a series of murals that have become popular Dunwoody landmarks due to their high caliber of artistry and visibility on the Spruill Smoke House wall at the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Meadow Lane.
Dunwoody MARTA Station Mural
The City of Dunwoody is partnering with MARTA, the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs), Dunwoody Art Commission and Living Walls to commission a large mural on the Dunwoody MARTA Station parking deck facing Hammond Drive.
“This is a high-profile area in Dunwoody’s Perimeter Center, and this grand project will bring vibrancy to what’s now a rather drab wall,” Starling said. “It will help make our mark as a community that supports and invests in public art.
A call for artists will be released soon, with installation scheduled for spring 2023.
Flower Goddess, North Italia
The recently opened restaurant on Ashford Dunwoody Road features the Flower Goddess 2022 mural by Artist Lela Brunet on its outdoor patio. Approved by the Dunwoody Art Commission, members posed with Dunwoody City Council Members during the restaurant’s ribbon-cutting in August.
Under the Canopy, Ashford Lane
“Under the Canopy” is coming soon to Dunwoody’s Ashford Lane mixed-use development. The large-scale mural will cover two sides of the Ashford Lane parking deck, energizing the central green and creating a cultural center for the surrounding offices, hotels and residential towers. “Under the Canopy” is a kaleidoscope-like interpretation of a lush English walled garden, and the painted mural’s modern and familiar design creates an important backdrop to The Lawn. By repurposing old infrastructure, this large-scale installation will serve as another vital step in creating a vibrant gathering place for families and nearby office workers.
Green Light Art
Later this month, the City of Dunwoody plans to begin the installation of its new Green Light Art Project. Inspired by the Storefront Art Project, it will feature art created by Dunwoody High students. Selected works are being scanned to create art wraps for traffic control boxes across Dunwoody.
“We were really impressed with the students’ designs, and we’re excited to share their creativity with a wider audience beyond the Dunwoody Village businesses where they were featured,” said Rosemary Watts, the Dunwoody business and cultural development manager. “Green Light Art is another example of our commitment to public art.”
Grounded Growth, Brook Run Park
Grounded Growth, a beautiful and functional sculpture that serves as a bike rack for residents and visitors, was unveiled in July by Dunwoody Parks and Recreation. Designed and built by local artist Huelani Mei Fogleman, Grounded Growth is located in Brook Run Park near the Great Lawn and Amphitheatre. The sculpture consists of three flowers that are 10 to 15 feet in height, and the centers of the flowers are recycled bicycle wheels. A total of eight individual bike rack leaves surround the stems, and each can secure at least two bikes. Fogleman used vibrant colors for the sculpture’s powder-coated finish.
