50th Anniversary of Dunwoody High School

by Audra H. Anders for The Aha! Connection

Last week Tom Bass and Steve Fortenberry invited me to come by Dunwoody High to chat with them about how they plan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our favorite high school!

While in Tom’s conference room I immediately grabbed my phone and started following their new Facebook and Instagram pages.   Their latest video will CRACK you up and there are plenty more in the works so go ahead and follow their social now!

I’ll highlight a few of the upcoming events…..

Tom’s going to “raise the roof” for the 50 hours leading up to the return of the faculty for the upcoming school year (July 30 & 31).   He says he’s going to live on the roof of DHS for 50 hours.   I cannot wait to see this.

This year’s homecoming parade is scheduled for September 22.  If you know any of the past 50 homecoming Kings and Queens please have them email dunwoody50th@gmail.com   All are invited to participate in the parade this year!

November 4th will be a sports related celebration.   There’s an off campus 80’s party scheduled for February 4th at Bar{n}.   Finally, April 15th will be a huge celebration and will honor the arts.   I’ll provide more details closer to each event.   Meanwhile, following is an excerpt from the website explaining a little more about the 50th Celebration:

Dunwoody High School is kicking off its 50th year celebration this summer. Come join us as we build a strong vision for our future. Our focus is on these 3 areas:

  • Academics: We strive to provide students with the best curriculum and classroom technology. Your donation will support academic items that enhance the classroom experience.
  • Athletics: Part of the Dunwoody High School experience is to compete in athletics on our fields and courts. Our students and fans deserve the best facilities, and necessary purchases include a new wrestling mat, weight room equipment, and fan seating for the new athletic fields.
  • Arts: We focus on the total student experience, and the Arts is a big priority. Your donation will help to buy new sound equipment for the drama department, and instruments for the orchestra and marching band.

If you would like to donate to our efforts to improve our school in these key areas please go to dunwoodyhighalumni.org/dhs50  We are planning many events to celebrate our 50th Anniversary, and we hope you will take part. Follow our social media platforms and check back on the website for exciting news as we continue to celebrate throughout the year!
