Construction on Phase 1 of the Winters Chapel shared-use path is underway and will progress as allowed by utility relocation.
Dunwoody, GA – April 5, 2022 – The first section of a new shared-use path on Winters Chapel Road has been poured as utility relocation continues along other sections. Phase 1 of the project calls for a 12-foot path along the west side of Winters Chapel Road between Dunwoody Club Drive and Charmant Place.
“Normally we wouldn’t begin construction until most of the utility relocation work is completed,” said Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith. “But our contractor saw an opportunity to begin working on sections of the path, which will save some time on the schedule for this much-anticipated project.”
Due to the complexities, length and coordination with other municipalities and property owners, plans for a shared-use path on the west side of Winters Chapel Road from Dunwoody Club Drive to Peeler Road have been divided into two phases. Phase 1 from Dunwoody Club Drive to Charmant Place includes the following improvements:
- Adding a 12-foot wide, concrete, shared-use path with lighting
- Adding a crosswalk and pedestrian refuge island at Congregation Beth Shalom
- Realigning the end of Dunwoody Club Drive to intersect Winters Chapel Road at more of a right angle and adding sidewalk on the south side of Dunwoody Club Drive
- Adding a stormwater collection system and raising the elevation of the roadway to address poor drainage and to retain rainwater runoff from the additional impervious surface
Phase 1 is expected to be completed in the spring of 2023. The $1.6 million cost is being funded mostly through the city’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The City has applied for grant funding for Phase 2, which would run from Charmant Place south to Peeler Road.
“The relocation of overhead and underground power, communications and gas lines is complicated and time-consuming,” added Smith. “We’re glad to see the utility work has progressed to the point where the contractor can begin productive work on the path.”
