Hawaii has been very strict during Covid with a mandatory 14-day quarantine required to visit. Among the U.S. states, only Nevada relies more heavily on tourism so reviving Hawaii’s economy has become extremely important! Hawaii had a record 10.4 million visitors in 2019. 2020 is estimated to be 73% below last year’s numbers!!
Hawaii was supposed to open on August 1 but was delayed twice due to Covid concerns. A pre-travel Covid testing program is set to launch this week to open Hawaii safely and revive its struggling economy. To bypass the 14-day quarantine, the traveler must test negative 72 hours before their travel dates.
Given the fluid situation in Hawaii and the brand-new testing program, planning a Christmas trip to Hawaii could be risky. I would recommend visiting further out in the spring or summer but planning for those time periods should begin now. Demand for future Hawaii travel will continue to grow, especially over the next few months.
Please remember to travel responsibly, wear your mask and do not travel unnecessarily if you are elderly or immune-compromised!
