The Arbor Day Foundation named Dunwoody as a 2019 Tree City USA community for its commitment to effective urban forest management.
Dunwoody, GA – February 20, 2020 – For the eighth year, the City of Dunwoody is being recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA” community for making the planting and care of trees a priority.
“Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,” said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The trees being planted and cared for by Dunwoody are ensuring that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life.”
Dunwoody achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Mr. Lambe will join Dunwoody city leaders to celebrate Georgia Arbor Day at 10 a.m. on February 21 with a ceremonial tree planting at Dunwoody’s N. Shallowford Annex, located at 4470 N. Shallowford Road. Georgia Forestry Commission Director Chuck Williams, Dunwoody Parks & Recreation staff and members of the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee will also take part.
“The tree canopy in Dunwoody is one of our most important assets,” said City of Dunwoody Arborist Amanda Corr. “We work hard to protect it with the city’s one-for-one tree replacement program for all city projects. In fact, we usually go beyond the requirements in our plantings.”
The City of Dunwoody is teaming up with Trees Atlanta to lead volunteers in the planting of almost 200 trees at Brook Run Park on Saturday, February 22. Registration is still underway using this link.
