“Remember Jane” is a story about a young man, Marty, so wounded by a past hurt that he jumps at the opportunity to erase all memories involving a woman named Jane. He literally boxes up everything he associates with her and hands them over to a mysterious and powerful man in order to find some relief. But what he soon learns is that his memories and experiences are things that bleed into every part of his being and he can’t be who he is without all of it. His past-not just Jane-starts to disappear from his memory. Marty frantically begins a pursuit to find the mysterious man in the hopes of saving what precious memories he still has left. Really, it’s a race for his life.

I had the privilege of reading “Remember Jane” before it came out and at the time, quite frankly, the idea of being able to erase certain memories was appealing. We were knee-deep in some tough fostering and I was shepherding my little four-year old foster son (soon-to-be adopted son) through his last visits with his biological parents. I needed to be there with him as he navigated those emotional waters and I remember feeling physically ill at the thought of it all-about the heartache his parents were feeling, needing to pick up the pieces of a traumatized little heart and wishing I didn’t have these painful moments permanently imprinted on my heart. At that point I would’ve paid good money to forget any of it ever happened. But I tell you, time is an amazing thing and while those moments were excruciatingly difficult, they are precious to me and my son. That’s what this book is about. All of the moments-the broken and the beautiful-help make us who we are. They help make a life.
