From Terry Nall’s Councilman Update
After almost six years of service, our original police cars now have high mileage and are ready for replacement. The new vehicle style is a Silver Chevy Tahoe.
You’ll see these soon on our streets. This photo was taken before the rest of the emergency equipment is added.
The Ford Crown Vic model is no longer available. The new array of sedans have issues, not the least of which is a much smaller size, which makes it tight for the police officer and the equipment space.
Some time ago in preparation of replacing the fleet, a vehicle replacement committee was formed chaired by Lt. Barnes. This committee conducted research and analyzed options for the replacement of the fleet in light of Ford discontinuing the Crown Vic. In August of 2013, Lt. Barnes and other members of the committee attended the 2013 Fleet Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina. Committee members were able to see, feel and experience all of the fleet options up close and in person. They also had the opportunity to test drive each vehicle.
Both the Chevrolet Caprice and Dodge Charger were eliminated from consideration for a variety of reasons including poor performance, size and high maintenance costs. As a result, three vehicles remained for consideration. These vehicles included the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Interceptor Sedan and the Ford Interceptor Utility. All three vehicles get similar mpg for fuel. The price for each is listed below.
2015 Chevrolet Tahoe: $29,000
2015 Ford Interceptor Utility: $27,321
2015 Ford Interceptor Sedan: $23,744 (Doesn’t include several features like backing sensor, rear camera and trailer hitch included on the base Tahoe)
After careful consideration and evaluation, Lt. Barnes and the fleet replacement committee recommended replacing the uniform patrol fleet with the Chevrolet Tahoe. Chief Grogan supported the recommendation, as did the then City Manager, for the following reasons:
* #1 rated police vehicle by Vintrinsic
* Generous space for the driver
* Generous storage space for all of the equipment officers carry
* No blind spots for drivers
* Sits up higher for better viewing
* Low maintenance costs
* Exceptional re-sale value
